Hike to Grandpa’s Goldmine and Beyond
Slide show at bottom of page
GOD IS REAL!
It had been almost 15 years since I had been up to the beautiful mountain country where Grandpa’s Goldmine is located. I had my wife, son, dog, and cousin with me and we were all anticipating an adventurous day hike that would take us nearly 13,000 feet in elevation on a 10 mile round trip journey to a high alpine lake.
We arrived at the trail head on an early July morning. As soon as we got out of our car, I noticed a herd of elk crossing a patch of snow a few hundred yards above Grandpa’s Goldmine. I quickly took my camera out of my backpack and snapped off some long distant pictures. After that experience, I knew it was going to be a great day.
We checked out the goldmine and old bus for a moment which brought back an array of memories when I was younger. It was as if Grandpa was still up there looking for his long awaited treasure. We decided to continue on with our journey as we had a long day’s hike ahead of us.
After hiking a few hours, about three quarters of the way to our destination, we came around a bend on the trail and there lay the most beautiful majestic mountains, towering over us and the surrounding landscape. At first we could only see the tops of the peaks but as we made it to the crest of the high alpine ridge, the views took our breath away. The picture on the right doesn't do it justice. This is one of those times where you have to be there in person to truly capture the moment.
The same is true with our relationship with God. We can’t just sit on the sidelines and go through the motions. We have to get personally involved and that means getting out of our comfort zones and reaching out to new heights we never thought possible. With God, everything is possible!
The book goes into further detail about our hike.
